Scallops | Sushi Station

Blue plate special -- scallops!

The trick to successful dining at a conveyor belt sushi joint is teamwork. One person sits in view of the upcoming sushi choices and does color commentary about what to grab; one person keeps track of the number of plates/colors and calculates a running total; and someone else interacts with the waitress about drink refills when the mental attention of the others can’t be spared. A game plan is essential.

If you can finagle a seat near the exit from the kitchen, that’s ideal, but this place is so busy on the weekends that you’ll have to take whatever table they give you. Expect about 20-30 minutes wait time to divvy up your dining roles.

Red bean moshi wrapped in a bamboo leaf.

Is it worth the wait? Honestly, I’ve had much, much better sushi and far, far worse. But you don’t go to experience the highs of sushi cuisine, you go for the novelty of having sushi flying at you at the speed of a Kikkoman video:

Once the plates are counted up, expect to pay around $25 per person with tip.

Kopp's Frozen Custard

Kopp's peach melba custard.

On a weekend road trip to Wisconsin, I stopped by Kopp’s. Oh my! If you like custard, it is absolutely the place to go.  There are no words to describe just how good it is. So feast your eyes on this Peach Melba waffle cone and know that the custard is so rich and creamy that Culver’s can’t hold a candle to it.

There are one or two flavors to choose from at Kopp’s everyday, in addition to classic vanilla, and so far, I’ve liked everything I’ve sampled there. Right now, you can also get a mint chocolate shake in honor of St. Paddy’s Day.  Look out McDonald’s! The Shamrock Shake is so tasteless in comparison, it’s hardly worth mentioning. There are three Kopp’s locations, and it’s worth the trip.

Mars' Cheese Castle

The Mars' Cheese Castle's New digs.

The Mars’ Cheese Castle re-opened in its snazzy new digs Friday, and I couldn’t resist heading across the border to Wisconsin to check it out.  I joined the throng of eager cheese lovers snapping shots of the regal exterior from the parking lot moat that surrounds it, and happily the new look does the place justice — with flags flying from the ramparts and a drawbridge at the entrance.

The inside is a typical convenience store full of souvenirs, snacks, beer, wine and cheese, of course.  Like the old place, there’s a cafe in there too, but seating is limited.  I hope they add more tables.  There is so much more space in the new building that I think the old would fit into it three times over.  At first, it seemed to me that the cheese choices in the vast expanse were more limited than before, but now I think they are very much what they ever were, they’re just more spread out.

The Mars’ Cheese Castle is still a must-stop destination for any Wisconsin road trip, and now it looks better than ever!
