Ravioli | Green Zebra

Ravioli topped with a melody of summer veggies.

Even though I eat mostly vegetarian, it’s good to be reminded from time to time how excellent vegetarian cuisine can be. Fortunately, Green Zebra is on the scene to provide that reminder. For $55, they provide a Chef’s Tasting Menu that won’t leave anyone wondering at the end where the meat was. There are a few fish items on the menu for those craving protein, but mostly the menu is a delight of vegetarian and vegan options. It’s still the best vegetarian fine dining option in Chicago.

Rye of the Tiger | Hamburger Mary's

A pour of Rye of the Tiger from Hamburger Mary's.

Last night we attended the sold-out Beer Under Glass event sponsored by the Illinois Craft Brewers Guild. Argus, Goose Island, Half Acre, Hamburger Mary’s, Metropolitan, Rock Bottom Chicago and Two Brothers set up tasting stations at different spots throughout Garfield Park Conservatory for people to quaff microbrews. Marion Street Cheese Market served pulled pork sandwiches and sunchoke soup, and Green Zebra kept the vegetarians happy with a savory bread pudding topped with fresh asparagus and rhubarb cream puffs.

Green Zebra

Green Zebra constructs a dish to accompany the beer.

I think the mix of brews from across the city, delicious nibbles, and lush green scenery was a successful combination. Pete Crowley, president of the ICBG, was also pleased with the setting and is considering future events at the venue. A lager in the cactus room this Fall? Sipping Belgian Ale amongst the ferns? Why yes, we’d be happy to return for that.

Fried green tomatoes never tasted so good!

Fried green tomatoes never tasted so good!

Who says that vegetarian food needs to be a crunchy granola meat substitute? Green Zebra doesn’t push the tofu or try to recreate meat dishes in vegetable form, but seeks to bring out the best of seasonal vegetables. How happy were with the experience? Tune in to the podcast.
