I pulled myself away from waxy bags of candy corn long enough to make a trip to one of my favorite chocolate spots — Beijo de Chocolat. Skulls and mummies, oh my! While there, I picked up a few dark and milk chocolate brigadieros, a must-buy whenever I step into the store. They’ve won awards for their smooth, spicy ganache, and I’m glad to rediscover it every time I go.

I also couldn’t resist a trio of ghostly meringue cookies. There was nothing spooky about the hint of lemon in the cookies, but I’d rather have the flavor. Anything Beijo has is much better than what I could purchase in a orange Brach’s bag. I need to remind myself of that and steer clear of Walgreen’s for the remainder of the week. You should do the same.

Happy Halloween!

Milk & Dark Chocolate Brigadeiro | Beijo de Chocolat

Milk & Dark Chocolate Brigadeiro

Once someone (or a population of on-line food fiends) inserts the notion of chocolate in my head, I have to no choice but to satisfy the craving. My favorite spot for chocolate satisfaction these days is Beijo De Chocolat. This “Kiss of Chocolate” is tucked away on Foster Avenue near Northpark University, which I only mention because I like taking my stash over to the campus and savoring it there. Plating is important, but so is atmosphere.

Anyway, my absolute favorite truffle from Beijo is the dark chocolate brigadeiro — a kind of genius shell of Belgian dark chocolate filled with silky chocolate ganache. I got two, plus two of the milk chocolate brigadeiros in case my memory was faulty about which I liked better.

Turns out my memory was fine, but it wasn’t a hardship to enjoy a little more chocolate. I have to fortify myself against my next dip into the world of Twitter.

Beijo de Chocolat

A pair of delicious chocolates.

Beijo de Chocolat means “kiss of chocolate”, but the name doesn’t go far enough to describe the wonderful chocolates you get from this small, Brazilian purveyor of desserts. They’re particularly known for their signature brigadiero candies — dark or milk chocolate ganache filled with decadent, delicious, orgasmic chocolate. The only reason not to wolf them down at the counter is to take them home and enjoy with a fine glass of port…and to share with your Valentine, of course. Get a box of two for $3.70.

Bonus? If you go in before 11am, you can get a free doughnut with a cup of coffee. I plan to go earlier next time to complete my sugar fix.

Plan on buying chocolate for Valentine’s Day? Let me know where you’re getting your sweets on Twitter (@chicagobites) or in the comments.
