Violet Hour

The light is on outside!

When the outside light goes on, Violet Hour accepts customers into its darkened, cloistered interior. It has limited access so the bar never gets too crowded or noisy. Which is a good thing because people would be tripping and banging into each other if you didn’t space them out. People, it is dark in there! I had to hold a candle up to read their specialty cocktail list and didn’t know they were $13 each until I had the waitress read the bill to me later.

Having said that, the drinks were mint and the vibe was cool, but I think I’ll be quaffing my next tasty beverage where the light shines brightly. I feel old saying this, but I like to see the people I’m drinking with.

Irish stew and a Black Velvet is a great way to fight the February chill.

Irish stew and a Black Velvet is a great way to fight the February chill.

There’s nothing like some  hearty Irish  stew and a Poor Man’s Black Velvet for a little fortification  against Chicago’s biting February chill, and Lizzie McNeill’s, a pub tucked up along side the river on McClurg Court, does a decent job with both.

Lizzy’s is first and foremost a bar, and one of its greatest attributes is that it doesn’t pretend to be otherwise.  Still, friendly bartenders, a good amount of table space, and comfy chairs situated in front of a cozy fireplace make Lizzy’s an appealing place to go and stay awhile.

There’s something on tap anytime the doors are open, but the cook is only there in the evenings starting at 5:30ish, so don’t come looking to snack before then.  The food sticks to your bones, and if it’s meat that you’re craving, you’ll find some. The grub isn’t standout, but it hits the spot. The menu is standard, and you can’t go wrong if you get fries.

Everything on the menu comes with a side of wifi, giving Web surfers a nice alternative to coffee shop chains.  Simply ask the bartender for the network passcode, and you can happily surf, sip, and sample the evening away.  If you are going with laptop in tow, go earlier rather than later.  Lizzy’s gets pretty busy at night with locals and tourists alike, and when they arrive you’d be better off at Starbucks if you still want to write in public.

The view from Vertigo Looking for a good place to celebrate making it through the workweek? Try Vertigo for happy hour.

Situated atop the Dana Hotel, Vertigo has a small mod outdoor patio with spectacular views (left) of the surrounding high-rises.

Some girlfriends and I recently spent a lovely evening there enjoying the scene, and I recommend it.

A few tips before you go:

Get there early so you can get a seat. The patio gets crowded quick.

Ask for the cocktail you really want. The bartender is good, but the fru-fru drinks on the menu are merely average.

Don’t go hungry. Although the chicken we tried was good, there’s very little of it and it’s expensive. So have a drink and take in the view, but then move on down the street to one of the restaurants on State for dinner. You’ll get more bang for your hard earned dollar.

TGIF Chicago!
