I’m not gonna lie — Winter has been dragging me down lately. Even though it’s been unseasonably mild out, the lack of light and general blah has reduced my enthusiasm for food and dining to brief forays into take-out and wistful longing for fresh-from-the-garden salad greens. It took some effort to convince myself that a dining event in February would be more awesome than my couch.

I am so glad I went to First Bites Bash, the kick-off event for Chicago Restaurant Week. The bash showcased the restaurants participating in the $22 lunch and $33/$44 dinner prix fixe deals happening later this month, February 17 through February 26, 2012. More than that, it was a chance to connect with local chefs and industry people, and the vast and friendly food community that makes Chicago feel like a small town.

Between the Cctopus Roll from Japonais and the Whiskey Bacon Bar from Black Dog Gelato, it also whet my appetite for fine dining. Fortunately, there are still reservations available through the Choose Chicago site.

Time to whittle down the list of options, chase away the Winter blues and tuck into some awesome food!
