The Ice Cream & Gelato Festival was held last night at the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame (1431 West Taylor Street), but without any local producers present. Black Dog Gelato, Nice Cream, Ruth & Phils, and Sweet Ape were all missing. Instead, attendees were treated to smaller, national producers like Zingerman’s and Graeter’s and selections from few area restaurants including Cibo Matto, Lockwood and Marion Street Cheese Market.
Lack of local support aside, it was a nice event in a lovely venue. I started the evening on the rooftop patio of the museum, which affords excellent views of Chicago’s skyline. “Real” food here included chicken tacos and selections of beer from Finch Brewery and Goose Island. On the third floor, about a dozen vendors handed out generous scoops of their best. Stinky cheese in ice cream seemed to be a trend, as did cherry flavors. My favorite was the black raspberry with chocolate shaving from Graeter’s — the density was perfect.
If you missed it, the festival runs again tonight between 6pm and 9pm. Tickets available at the door for $25 or you can buy online.
