Restaurant Week 2011 at The Red Canary

The buttermilk fried chicken rocks!

If you’re on the hunt for some comfort food with class, The Red Canary is the place to go.  An easy distance from the Chicago Blue Line stop or reachable via the Chicago bus, this spacious lounge-themed loft has a relaxed, funky, swank vibe that is approachable, fun, and up-scale — ultimately making it an excellent gathering spot for large groups or a merry party of two.  And you’re in luck.  There’s no better time to sample the fare than during restaurant week!

Two restaurant week menus are available at The Red Canary — one for $33 and one for $44.  Both offer a selection of three courses and the portions are generous all around, so I’d wager that either menu is a good bet, depending on your pocketbook and what sounds good to you.

The options on the $33 menu appealed most to me because they included The Red Canary’s signature buttermilk fried chicken and rosemary potatoes… the tantalizing combo that inspired me to visit in the first place.  My friend Jane and I ordered the cucumber-watermelon beet stack and the charred ahi tuna crostini to start, the fried chicken and the wild mushroom risotto for our main dishes, and warm chocolate chip cookies with milk and baked apple pie with housemade caramel ice cream for dessert. Yum!

Everything was excellent and not a single course missed the mark.  In fact, the fried chicken was some of the best we’ve tasted — rivaled only by the chicken at Hearty’s, and it’s going to take a return visit to both restaurants to determine whose is the best.  The ahi crostini was standout too… sushi grade tuna topped with Gorgonzola mousse. And who can go wrong with Apple Pie for dessert? The cookies and milk were classic as well and tasted better than the same combo served for dessert at Q.

Apple pie -- the ultimate comfort food.

In addition to good food, The Red Canary has a fascinating cocktail list, and what I sampled could easily compete with drinks of the Violet Hour ilk. If you like whiskey, try the 21st Amendment. It won’t disappoint. I look forward to going back in the summer to enjoy the outdoor beer garden and to get better food pics.  That lounge atmosphere means the diningroom is super dark.

More tales from restaurant week to come Thursday! Where are you dining this week?  Let us know.
