Midweek Food P0rn – Pirogi Anyone?

Pierogi platter.

Pirogi is just the sort of thing I crave this time of year, and where better to get them than at a place that’s been famous for them for 20 years? Mabenka Restaurant, located near Midway Airport, looks like a typical diner, but you won’t just find a short stack of blueberry pancakes on the menu.  You’ll also find any number of traditional Polish and Lithuanian dishes — beet soup, sausage, sauerkraut, and, of course, pirogi. The clientele tends older, and the place is populated by neighbors who dine there frequently. A couple of bites of the food and you’ll understand why.  Mabenka is a good and unusual dining option if you’re hungry while shuttling in and out of Midway this holiday season.
