If you’re looking for a good lunch deal you can’t go wrong with two courses for $22 or three courses for $28 at Pelago Ristorante. Located on a quiet stretch of Delaware Street just east of Michigan Avenue, Pelago’s spacious outdoor patio drew me in recently for a lunchtime bite, and the three course meal I had there turned out to be surprisingly decadent as well as affordable.
You can order anything off the menu if you decide to take advantage of the lunch deal, and the meal I had was bookended with memorable dishes. In addition to a variety of fresh bread options being served at every table, each table also gets a blend of ricotta, parmesan, and truffle oil served with bread rounds to start. The smooth, spreadable cheese blend was so good that it was all I could do not to ask the waiter to bring me another one.
The mixed green salad was also good. Hidden among the fresh greens and tomatoes were beets that gave the it an excellent flavor and texture.
For my main course I had the spinach ravioli in a rich cream sauce. The pasta was fresh, and it was just the right amount. Although the pasta was good, it paled in comparison to the starters. Still, I want to go back to try more main course options because there’s no question that my pasta dish was made with quality ingredients, and my take on it is certainly influanced by my personal taste preferences.
Finally, I topped off my meal with the Frollino, a sugar cookie ring filled with mascarpone sabayon and garnished with bananas and blueberry sorbet. This light and pretty dessert made my my taste buds happy. It wasn’t too sweet and was just enough.
Lunch at Pelago is is great way to sample a variety of dishes without blowing your dining budget. But beware — it’s likely to leave you wanting to go back for dinner!
