The Food Network’s Cat Cora visited the Downtown Farmstand Friday evening for a cooking demo and to sign her new cookbook Cat Cora’s Classics with a Twist. She chatted easily with the audience while throwing together a summery fresh grapefruit salad, talking about everything from how she prepares for battle on Iron Chef by selecting a cooking theme in advance, which she sticks to regardless of the secret ingredient, to what it was like to be one of the first women to be part of the new wave of TV celebrity chefs.
When asked where she likes to eat in Chicago, she sited food famously prepared by a laundry list of the city’s top chefs but remained decidedly tight lipped when asked to pick a favorite Chicago chef or one in general.
One of the most interesting topics she touched on was her continued work with Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move campaign, an effort spearheaded by the White House to teach kids about healthy eating and exercise. Cora said chefs from all over the country are mobilizing to help teach children and their parents what good food is all about, and she talked about the joy she gets out of cooking with her own children.
A shout out to @Krisko30 who won our ticket give away and joined me at the event. It was great to meet you, and enjoy your cookbook!
