We arrived at The Roof, atop the Doubletree’s Wit Hotel, just after 6pm. Perfect timing, since the sun had just crossed behind the buildings to the West, and we weren’t blinded by harsh evening light for long. Instead, we sat back to enjoy a mellow, cool architectural space — the perfect stage for the evening’s main attractions, which included remarks by Jonathan Boyer – the designer did the Sears Observation Deck and works on many of the city’s green and sustainable architectural initiatives; delicious small plate creations from the kitchen; and cocktails prepared by the The Roof’s mixologist.
It was a heady mix of architectural details, food, and drink to be sure. Unfortunately for Mr. Boyer, form did not follow the function of public speaking and his voice was lost in the high ceilings and to our straining ears. The food and drink fared much better.
Effen Vodka sponsored the event, and we had a choice of three drinks that reflected sustainability, focused on “green,” and were named in the spirit of Chicago style. Our favorite of the evening was the Second City Sparkler, a mixture of black cherry vodka, Prosecco and Domaine de Canton. It may very well turn out to be my mixed-drink-of-choice this summer! Pizzas, marinated olives, baked ricotta and delicious shrimp crostini were circulated about the room all evening to keep pace with the bar. Everything was fabulous.
It’s likely this spot will be overrun as the summer progresses. Even still, The Roof is the place to be in the Loop. We’ll be back!
