With so many great brunch spots in the city, it’s easy to overlook the spots that aren’t known for it. Cafe 28 should be added to the list of any must-try brunch. It’s located on a busy stretch of Iriving Park next to the Brown Line station, but inside it boasts a tranquil patio area where you can enjoy a cup of coffee in shady comfort.
Cafe 28 has the usual breakfast fare, but they give theirs a slightly Cuban twist with offerings like corn and banana pancakes and optional plantains on the side. On my last visit I enjoyed a tasty breakfast burrito that had been grilled and was served with a tangy green salsa that set my tongue on fire. The coffee refills were a little slow, but that’s because they refill by the glass instead of carrying around a carafe for the patrons. Slow coffee, however, is my only complaint about brunch here! It’s a lovely choice next time you’re struggling for a place to take out-of-town guests who aren’t used to the gargantuan waits the can accompany many neighborhood places.
Brunch is available Saturdays between 10:00am- 2:00pm and Sundays between 9:00am- 2:00pm.
