I was in the mood for a little Mexican food on Cinco de Mayo, so I had lunch today at Los Nopales in Lincoln Square with a like-minded friend. We arrived at 11:30 to an empty restaurant, but still had to wait ten minutes for menus. It was another ten minutes before the lone waitress took our order.

The guacamole was fresh and chunky but lacked any real flavor. We ran out of chips about halfway into through our order and had to wait for a large group of ten people to be seated and get their drinks before we could get the attention of our waitress. She waited until our entrees were ready to bring out a basket of chips.

Like the guacamole, my enchiladas con mole lacked in flavor. I love mole and look forward to a hint of sweetness and heat in the sauce. There was no excitement here. My dining companion had the beef taco dinner that was heavy and slathered in sour cream. By 1pm when we finally settled our bill, we both felt like stones had taken up residence in our stomachs.

If you’re in Lincoln Square and you don’t mind waiting around for a mediocre Mexican lunch, Los Nopales is the spot for you! Happy Cinco de Mayo!
