Great news for pie fanatics everywhere! When you need a fix of Paula’s pie, you can trek over to Chicago Avenue. Hoosier Mama Pie has a teeny-tiny shop where you can buy a slice with a cup of coffee for $5. Flavors vary day by day, and they run out of favorites early. I got there after 2pm and was sad to discover they were out of apple pie.
However, there was plenty of ersatz apple pie! Baking with Bertha‘s Bertha Mason was on hand to offer samples of the fake stuff, challenging people to guess the secret ingredient — Ritz Crackers, if you don’t know. It was a yummy April Fool’s Day treat!
However, I wasn’t interested in a whole pie or slice of the fake apple. And since I couldn’t get the real thing, I chose the banana cream. The slice was too big for just me, but I thoroughly enjoyed the taste and texture. My only complaint was there wasn’t enough of the delicious, flaky crust. It seemed to disappear under the weight of all the banana cream filling.
I look forward to trying the real apple pie later!
If you can’t make it to Chicago Avenue, Hoosier Mama distributes pies to coffee shops around the city.
