West Town’s Branch 27 is the new kid on the block. But the building itself has been there awhile — it used to be the 27th ward library, which ultimately inspired the name of the current establishment. Sporting a wildly varied American-style menu, Branch 27 joins the ranks of places flanking Chicago Avenue and aims to offer an upscale pub experience at a reasonable price. Does it manage it? We took a first taste the other night. Listen in and find out.

Enjoyed your review and I’ve been dying to try this place since it’s in an old library. But since the food seems sub-par compared to similar restaurant options (Perennial, Gage), does the ambiance compensate enough for the mediocre yet expensive meal?!

Right now, the ambiance doesn’t compensate, no. I like the other places you mentioned better. But it’s still worth swinging by, even if you only have a beer. I hope the food improves — Branch 27 is still so new and is just getting on its feet. For it to get better over time, people have to go there. If you go, let us know what you think!
