Bourdain Fangirl

Anthony Bourdain at the Michigan Avenue Borders.

Bridget and I were fortunate enough to get front row seats at the No Reservations book signing last night. Tony canned his set speech immediately and dove into Q&A with the crowd. He was entertaining, blunt, and pretty open about his life. And when he didn't know where to eat in Paris, he wasn't shy about calling on one of his staff for recommendations. Love it! I also loved his answer to what was the greatest driver in his life: "Spite."

For sure, I'm going to eat wherever that man suggests -- even at Hot Doug's! But do me a favor and don't tell Tony they sell vegetarian hot dogs!

I am SO jealous! Is he really towering giant tall?

Bridget said:

Yes, Pattie. He is tall. But not towering.

And T is right. Tony did not disappoint. He ambled into Borders—beer in hand—and challenged the crowd to ask him interesting questions. A lively exchange followed that was truly Bourdain. And if you don’t know what I mean by that, read one of his books. The man knows who he is, he’s frank, and has no qualms about it. What’s not to love? Using “Nasty Bits” as a guide to Las Vegas dining (one of T’s strokes of genius) endeared Tony to me, but seeing him in person was even more entertaining than I’d hoped. Next on my dream-dining list? A trip to Les Halles. It’s safe to say that T is not Tony’s only fan girl.

I've read Kitchen Confidential, that's how I first heard of him. I understand exactly what you mean. I wish I had known he was in town.

I ate at Les Halles shortly after Kitchen Confidential was published--TB was not nearly as big as now, but he could not have been more gracious or humble with his fans!!!
